Major Trading Sessions (London, New York, Tokyo, Sydney)

The forex market operates across four major trading sessions that follow the sun around the globe, providing nearly continuous trading from Sunday evening to Friday evening (UTC). The Sydney session opens first at 22:00 UTC, followed by Tokyo at 00:00 UTC, London at 08:00 UTC, and New York at 13:00 UTC. Each session has its own characteristics in terms of volatility, volume, and the instruments most actively traded.

The London session is the most significant for gold trading, accounting for approximately 35% of all forex volume. London's opening often sets the tone for the day and frequently triggers breakout moves in XAUUSD. The New York session is equally important, particularly when it overlaps with London between 13:00-17:00 UTC. This overlap period sees the highest volatility and liquidity in gold, making it the prime window for active traders.

The Tokyo and Sydney sessions tend to be quieter for gold, with tighter ranges and lower volume. However, significant moves can occur during the Asian session when major economic data is released from China, Japan, or Australia. Understanding session dynamics helps traders optimize their entry timing and avoid periods of low liquidity where spreads may widen and price action becomes choppy.

Whatever session you trade, check your broker's spreads at that time of day: spreads on gold can widen sharply when liquidity is thin, which raises your trading costs.
