Gold trades almost around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening — but it doesn’t behave the same at every hour. Knowing when the market is busiest can help you get tighter spreads and clearer price moves.
The four trading sessions
The market follows the sun through four main sessions. Approximate opening times in UTC (times shift by an hour when daylight saving changes):
| Session | Approx. hours (UTC) | What to expect for gold |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 22:00 – 07:00 | Quiet, narrower ranges |
| Tokyo | 00:00 – 09:00 | Steady; moves on Asian news and Chinese data |
| London | 08:00 – 17:00 | Busy — often sets the direction for the day |
| New York | 13:00 – 22:00 | Busy — US data and Fed news drive big moves |
The sweet spot: the London–New York overlap
The most active period for gold is usually 13:00 to 17:00 UTC, when London and New York are open at the same time. This is when:
- Trading volume is highest
- Spreads are typically at their tightest
- Major US economic data is released (often at 12:30 or 14:00 UTC)
Many day traders focus on this window.
Other useful times
- London open (around 07:00–09:00 UTC): gold often breaks out of the overnight range.
- US data releases: jobs reports, inflation (CPI) and Federal Reserve decisions can move gold sharply. Check the economic calendar before you trade.
- Asian session: better suited to traders who prefer calmer, range-bound conditions.
Times to be careful
- The minutes around big news — prices can jump and spreads can widen.
- The daily rollover (around 21:00–22:00 UTC) — spreads often widen briefly as markets reset.
- Friday evening and Sunday open — liquidity is thin and the market can open with a price gap.
- Holidays — when London or New York is closed, volumes drop.
Match the time to your style
| If you are… | Consider trading… |
|---|---|
| A day trader | The London–New York overlap |
| A swing trader | Any time — focus on daily charts, not the clock |
| Working full-time | Set alerts and review charts in the evening; avoid rushing trades around news |
