How to Install MT5 on Your Phone and PC (Step by Step)

MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is one of the most popular trading platforms in the world. It’s free, works on almost any device, and is offered by thousands of brokers. Here’s how to get it set up in a few minutes.

Before you start

You’ll need two things from your broker:

  1. Your login (account number) and password
  2. Your server name — for example “BrokerName-Live” or “BrokerName-Demo”. This is usually in your welcome email or your broker’s client area.

Tip: Download MT5 from your broker’s website or the official app stores. Your broker’s version is pre-set with its server list, which makes logging in easier.

Installing MT5 on Windows

  1. Go to your broker’s website (or metatrader5.com) and download the MT5 installer.
  2. Open the downloaded file and click Next to install.
  3. When MT5 opens, go to File → Login to Trade Account.
  4. Enter your login, password and server, then click OK.
  5. You’ll hear a short sound and see prices start moving — you’re connected.

Installing MT5 on Mac

  1. Download the MT5 app for macOS from your broker’s website or metatrader5.com.
  2. Open the file and drag MetaTrader 5 into your Applications folder.
  3. Open MT5, then log in with your account details as above.

Installing MT5 on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the App Store and search for “MetaTrader 5” (by MetaQuotes).
  2. Tap Get to install, then open the app.
  3. Go to Settings → New Account → Login to an existing account.
  4. Search for your broker’s server, select it and enter your login and password.

Installing MT5 on Android

  1. Open Google Play and search for “MetaTrader 5”.
  2. Install and open the app.
  3. Tap the menu, choose Manage accounts → +, find your broker’s server and log in.

Prefer not to install anything?

Most brokers offer MT5 WebTrader, which runs in your browser. Log in from your broker’s website — no download needed.

Setting up your first chart

  1. Open Market Watch (Ctrl+M on Windows) to see the list of markets.
  2. Right-click a market, such as XAUUSD or EURUSD, and choose Chart Window.
  3. Pick a time frame from the toolbar — H1 (one hour) is a good place to start.
  4. Add an indicator via Insert → Indicators, for example a Moving Average.

Can’t see gold or a currency pair?

Right-click inside Market Watch and choose Show All. Some brokers use slightly different names, such as “XAUUSD.m” or “GOLD”.

Frequently asked questions

Is MT5 free?
Yes — the platform is free. You only pay your broker’s trading costs, such as spreads or commissions.

Can I use one MT5 app for several brokers?
On mobile, yes — you can add accounts from different brokers. On desktop, it’s usually best to install your broker’s own version.

What’s the difference between MT4 and MT5?
MT5 is the newer platform, with more time frames, more order types and a built-in economic calendar. Many brokers offer both.

Next step: Practise on a free demo account first — or compare brokers that offer MT5.
